Three days in the Hoeksche Waard

24 september 2022 - Zuidland, Nederland

After getting some more stuff done it was time Wednesday to leave for De Hoeksche Waard to sit our lease dogs. 😊
Two this time, the old timer age almost 15, went to stay with another family so she has a holiday too and all the attention to herself.
We took care of Ikkemai and her daughter Norah. Two beautiful Dutch shorthair Shepard's who really want to work with and for you.
When Ikkemai was three months her owners, my nephew and his wife, went on a vacation and I took care of her. After that, she goes ballistic when she sees me, she never forgot.

The weather was great. Sunny and a couple of degrees warmer than Monday and Tuesday. De Hoekse Waard is very flat, windy always and there seem to be no end to the fields.

A little history about the greatest natural disaster in The Netherlands in the 20th century In 1953 dikes broke in more then 150 places in the country.
The combination of a heavy north-westerly storm and a spring tide caused flooding in large parts of the country. The disaster claimed the lives of 1,836 people and tens of thousands of animals, and many homes were destroyed.

Building the Delta Works
Rijkswaterstaat started building the Delta Works in the year following the Great Flood of 1953. The massive project, with 3 locks, 6 dams and 5 storm surge barriers, was completed in 1997. Since 2018 the Haringvliet Barrier also functions as a storm surge barrier, making the number of storm surge barriers managed by Rijkswaterstaat a total of 6.

So far the history lesson, back to our 3 day vacation

Thursday we went into town in Oud Beijerland where I was able FINALLY to buy a new winter coat.
I thought I had a pretty one but when we were packing our suit cases to move here the husband said he so disliked that coat. I had it since 2015 so time to let Vincent de Paul find it a new owner and buy me a new one. We had a nice lunch in town and saw some sights. We didn't stay to long because of the doggies being home alone.

Friday we went to a town called Brielle.
It will be worth to click the link, the town is VERY old and has a history that blows my mind.
When we left in the morning, the farmer was harvesting onions in the field next to the house. I told hubby: when we come back I will go pick a bag of leftovers. The machine never gets everything and here we are allowed to pick up some of what is left, its not stealing.
A good thing I did when I did, not waiting until this morning because when I walked the dogs at 10.30 PM, they were busy plowing the field with a big machine. The lights on it are humongous and a farmer is never done.
Monday I will make a pot of French Onion soup, that will last a little since I am having surgery coming Tuesday and playing the 1 arm bandit for a while.
I am not sure how much my readers like to cook or look at recipes. On Facebook I have a page with (Dutch) soups and dishes that are healthy and tasty.
Should you want to make French Onion soup too go to THE SOUP TURREEN.

I made a picture album containing pics of both cities which you can see HERE.

Hopefully I can write a new blog next Saturday but that depends on how invasive hand surgery is Tuesday and how quickly I will heal.
I wish you all a great weekend and a good (work)week to come.

Until next time, may love, health and peace be with you all❣️

Sounds like you love being back in your homeland with your family and all the things you love. The photos are very nice. Hope the surgery goes well.
